Associate Underwriter

Posted: 06/01/2025

At Co-op, we’re committed to protecting our communities through responsible, member-focused property and casualty insurance. Our team is collaborative, values-driven, and committed to helping employees build long-term, meaningful careers in the insurance industry. We’re looking for an Associate Underwriter who’s ready to apply analytical skills and sound judgment to support risk evaluation and policy decisions. This is an ideal opportunity for someone with a foundation in insurance or finance who is ready to deepen their underwriting expertise, with a clear pathway to grow into a full Underwriter role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate Risk
    • Analyze insurance applications, coverage needs, and historical loss information to assess risk and make recommendations.
  • Support New and Existing Business
    • Work closely with insurance agents and internal partners to support new business placement and growth of current accounts in line with Co-op’s risk appetite.
  • Develop Underwriting Acumen
    • Apply company guidelines to determine appropriate actions—accept, reject, or modify coverage—and gradually work toward independently managing an agency assignment.
  • Assist in Complex Cases
    • Support senior underwriters in evaluating large accounts or non-standard risks, learning from hands-on experience.
  • Ensure Documentation Compliance
    • Review and process policy documentation for accuracy, consistency, and adherence to regulatory standards.
  • Communicate Clearly
    • Maintain effective communication with agents, brokers, and internal teams to clarify decisions, answer inquiries, and support policy servicing.
Qualifications
  • Comfort with learning and using underwriting tools and technology.
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, business, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Exposure to or interest in the insurance industry preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to assess complex data to make informed decisions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A proactive, learning-oriented mindset with interest in professional development.
  • Willingness to pursue insurance designations such as AINS, AU, or CISR.
Hourly Pay Range $21.75 – 32.65
