Plant Sanitarian

Our dairy cooperative is seeking a Plant Sanitarian at our Middlebury, VT location. The typical schedule is a 8-hour shift from 4am-12pm Monday-Friday. However, flexibility is needed to oversee sanitation & be involved in audits. Schedule may be subject to change depending on plant production needs.

Position Overview: 

The Plant Sanitarian reports directly to the Quality Assurance Manager and is responsible for managing the plant sanitation programs to determine if operations meet company plant specifications and comply with state and Federal Regulatory Standards. The Sanitarian will enforce the policies and procedures surrounding food sanitation and safety.  Consult with management to address sanitation issues and develop corrective action plans.  Develop training programs related to sanitation and chemical safety.  Identify and implement company best practices and deliver these initiatives to employees during training in one-on-one or group settings.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement and maintain plant sanitation programs that ensures sanitary equipment for the manufacturing of food products, and to meet or exceed State and Federal Regulatory Standards, the facility’s Food Safety and Food Quality Manuals, and company directives.
  • Conduct daily Sanitation inspections, CIP checks, and Pre-Operational testing and inspections.
  • Play a key role in the development and implementation of the facility's Master Sanitation Program and will work with peer Plant Production Supervisors to schedule completion of master sanitation tasks.
  • Analyze and resolve sanitation problems by assisting supervisors and employees in implementing corrective actions for these problems.
  • Work with the sanitation companies' representatives to develop, implement, and maintain the facility's sanitation programs.
  • Work closely with and direct cleaning company representative targeting areas of the plant with sanitation concerns
  • Ability to recommend measures to continuously improve sanitation methods and equipment.
  • Validate SSOP's annually or when systems are modified.
  • Train and instruct employees in regard to sanitation standards, GMP's, SSOP's, chemical safety.
  • Support Site(s) Plant Food Safety Culture Initiatives through ongoing training and education.
  • Ordering and maintaining chemical inventories that are used in all areas of the plant
  • Understand how chemicals work in the sanitation process
Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS or AS degree in science-based area of study preferred. High School Diploma or GED and 2 years related experience and/or training required.
  • Working knowledge of sanitation operations, and current and developing sanitation techniques.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Working ability on Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Working knowledge of HACCP, SQF code, SQF Practitioner Certification preferred.
  • HTST reseal certified preferred
  • Ability to adapt to changing operational needs and lead others through change.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong team player and leader with the ability to work across multiple functions and disciplines.
  • Ability to select, coach, develop, engage and retain a team of employees.
 Work Environment:

Requires the full function of hearing, vision and speech with or without assistive devices.  The need to walk, stand, bend, reach, climb, stoop, kneel on a daily basis is required. 

Pay range for this position is $60,000-$73,000, depending on experience.
