Otter Valley Union Middle and High School High School is seeking a teacher for the 26-27 school year to provide general education instruction for students assigned to our alternative learning program for students in Grades 7-9. The program will serve between six and ten students at a time, and will be facilitated by a general educator, special educator, and behavior intervention staff. This program is a new and exciting effort underway at Otter Valley. There is a team that is working hard to create the contours of the program, but the person ultimately hired into the role will have significant latitude in shaping the student experience and practices within the program. It is envisioned that the successful candidate will be comfortable in designing and facilitating project-based learning experiences connected to the essential learnings of grade-level courses, providing support to students when they are working in general education settings, and providing instruction in social-emotional learning and behavior competencies in partnership with program staff, school counselors, and the social-emotional learning professional.
Job Responsibilities
All Otter Valley teachers are expected to:
- Implement standards-aligned units of study and engaging lessons
- Use content-specific pedagogical techniques to engage learners
- Use assessment to inform instruction throughout the learning process
- Create positive classroom cultures focused on relationships, inclusive practices, and reciprocal trust
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues to improve teaching methods and ensure supports are in place for all students
- Specific competencies for this position include:
- Adapt curriculum to synergize student interests and abilities with the school’s Portrait of a Graduate
- Deliver content instruction in an interdisciplinary, project-based manner
- Integrate social-emotional learning, behavior instruction, and career awareness with academic learning
- Work in conjunction with a team of teachers, professional, and paraprofessional staff to support the learning needs of students
- Implementation of trauma-informed and restorative practices to ensure that students in the program have an appropriate and sensitive environment
- Collect and utilize student data in order to inform decisions about programming and placement
- Build and maintain rapport with students with complex behavioral and SEL needs
Education, Training and Experience Requirements
- Possession of or eligibility for a Vermont teaching license. Any areas of licensure will be considered; however, a candidate with an endorsement in ELA, Science, or Social Studies is desirable.
- Ability to provide instructional support in a variety of content areas
- A desire to work with students in need of significant support in the areas of academic engagement, attendance, and behavior
